Behaviour:
The calling song is one of the most characteristic grasshopper songs. It consists of a buzzing sound lasting 10-20 sec. regularly rising and falling in pitch (comparable to a siren). It is rather soft and hesitant at the start, but soon reaches full intensity (when it is audible from about 5m). The start can be represented as 'zi-zi-zuizuizuizui...'. During the song one hind femur is drawnacross the fore wings slightly in advance of the other, so that they are temporarily displaced (see upper illustration). The courtship song in frontof the female is quite different: in its first phase consiting of short, sharp sounds ('tsitsitsitsi'); in its second, like the calling song. [1]
